April 8, 2025 | Pine Ridge, SD — This past weekend, Maȟpíya Lúta proudly hosted the first-ever Wetu Ahí Basketball Tournament, bringing together more than 500 student-athletes and over 60 teams from across the region. Held April 4–6, the tournament featured divisions for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and marked a major celebration of youth basketball, community, and Lakota pride.
Maȟpíya Lúta was well-represented on the court, with teams from every grade level competing—and many bringing home top honors. The 2nd Grade Girls, 4th Grade Girls, 5th Grade Boys, and 6th Grade Girls teams each captured 1st place in their divisions, showing incredible skill and teamwork throughout the weekend.
Other strong finishes included:
- 1st Grade Girls, 3rd Grade Girls, and High School Boys – Runner-Up
- 5th Grade Girls – 3rd Place
Several Maȟpíya Lúta athletes also played on mixed-school rosters. Notably, Maȟpíya Lúta girls contributed to both the 8th Grade Girls Championship Team and the runner-up High School Girls Team, further highlighting the depth of talent and sportsmanship in our school community.
Teams traveled from near and far—including as far as Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Hill City, to take part in a weekend of competitive play, community engagement, and celebration.
“We are proud of all our students who played with heart and represented Maȟpíya Lúta with pride,” said tournament organizers. “This tournament is more than basketball—it’s about community, culture, and creating opportunities for our youth.”
Wóphila tȟáŋka (many thanks) to all the coaches, volunteers, families, and supporters who made this weekend possible. We look forward to making the Wetu Ahí Tournament an annual tradition that continues to grow and inspire.
