The Maȟpíya Lúta Middle School Boys C Team made history this past weekend, claiming the Big Foot Conference C Team Tournament Championship at Wolf Creek School. After an incredible season, the boys capped it off in dominating fashion, winning four straight games to bring home the title. Their final record stands at an impressive 8-2 for the season.
The championship run began with a strong 45-30 victory over American Horse School in the first round. The boys followed that with an explosive 52-32 win over Pine Ridge in game two. In a hard-fought semifinal matchup against Wolf Creek, Maȟpíya Lúta held on for a thrilling 52-47 win. They sealed the tournament championship with a convincing 40-21 victory over Red Shirt in the finals.
Coach Mary, now in her second year leading the C Team, expressed pride in her team’s growth. “Last year, we were runner-up champions, and this year, we finished the job. These boys worked hard and believed in each other every step of the way,” she said.
The team includes a talented group of 5th graders: Zaiden, DJ, Tasunke, Ricky, Ernest, Alee, Bear, and Diyari. Most of these players—Diyari, Bear, Zaiden, Ernest, Alee, Tasunke, and Ricky—have been part of the Maȟpíya Lúta basketball family since kindergarten. DJ, a recent addition to the team, quickly became an important piece of the lineup.
Throughout the season, the boys focused on supporting one another and respecting their roles on the team. They set a goal to encourage each other, act as warriors on the court, and stay connected as a family. Their teamwork, effort on both ends of the floor, and commitment to each other were key in their championship run.
Special thanks go out to the Booster Club, comprised of the team’s moms, dads, and grandmas, who kept the boys fueled with snacks and support all season long. A heartfelt thank you also goes to Kat, Thetna, Robert, and the rest of the Maȟpíya Lúta staff for their behind-the-scenes support.
Development coaches Bear Haas Sr., Nick Hernandez, and Braelon Little were also recognized for their work helping the boys develop their skills and love for the game.
And finally, the team gives thanks to Tȟuŋkášila for the strength, guidance, and blessings throughout the season.
