The Maȟpíya Lúta Khiíŋyaŋkapi track and field team made their presence known at the Todd County Invite on April 16, 2026, turning in a strong performance filled with personal records and season bests. For a young team still finding its footing in just its second meet of the season, the results were exciting.
Boys Results
On the boys’ side, Dreysen Steele opened his long jump campaign with a personal record leap of 18’7, good enough for 7th place.
Tokeya Big Crow had a standout day across multiple events, finishing 10th in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 25.86 before turning around and claiming 4th place in the 400 with a personal record of 56.69.
Tatum Brewer soared to a 5th-place finish in the long jump with a personal record of 19’0.5, a leap that puts her among the competitors to watch in the events ahead.
The boys’ 4×100 relay team of Braiden Lunderman, Jesse Carlow, Dreysen Steele, and Tokeya Big Crow rounded out the day with a 6th-place finish, crossing the line in 51.24.
Girls Results
The girls delivered a day full of highlights and personal bests. Kaimana Newbrough had one of the most impressive multi-event days of the meet, recording personal records in both the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.95 for 6th place, and the 200-meter dash with a 29.08 for 4th place.
Josephine Haas added a season best of 14.05 in the 100-meter dash, finishing 9th, while Payton Vitalis made her mark in the 400-meter dash with a personal record of 1:16.06, finishing 10th.
Athena White Elk earned a 7th-place finish in the 800-meter run with a personal record of 3:05, then turned right around to claim a remarkable 2nd-place finish in the mile with a personal record time of 6:47.81. Her performance in the distance events gives the team a strong foundation in that area of the lineup.
Ofeila Zuniga represented the Khiíŋyaŋkapi in the shot put, placing 8th with a throw of 25’4.
The girls’ 4×100 relay team of Josephine Haas, Payton Vitalis, Taylor Weston, and Kaimana Newbrough brought the day to an exciting close with a 2nd place finish and a time of 57.52.
Looking Ahead
With personal records falling across nearly every event and a young roster still growing into their potential, the Maȟpíya Lúta Khiíŋyaŋkapi are building something worth watching. The team will take the momentum from Todd County into their next meet on April 22nd at Custer, where they will look to build on an already impressive early-season showing.
