The Maȟpíya Lúta Khiíŋyaŋkapi middle school track and field team traveled to Lakota Tech last Thursday, April 24th, for the Wolf Creek Invite, turning in a strong showing across multiple events and grade divisions.
Standout Performances
Payton Garrett set the tone early for the 7/8 boys, claiming 1st place in the 100 meter dash with an impressive time of 12.33, one of the top marks of the entire meet. He followed that up with a dominant performance in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line first with a time of 59.96. It was a remarkable multi-event day for Garrett, who established himself as one of the meet’s premier competitors.
Antoine Garnier had an equally impressive outing in the distance events. He claimed 1st place in the 7/8 boys 1600 meter run with a time of 5:49, well ahead of the field, and added a 1st place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:43.75. Garnier’s performance in the distance events was one of the highlights of the day for the Khiíŋyaŋkapi.
In the 7/8 boys 200 meter dash, the Khiíŋyaŋkapi swept three of the top seven spots. Louden Long Soldier led the way with a 1st place finish and a time of 25.91, while Jacob Franks Jr. followed with a strong 4th place finish at 32.65, and Max Shangreaux rounded out the trio with a 7th place finish at 35.12.
On the girls’ side, Ske Luta Giago led the way with a strong double, claiming 1st place in the 5/6 girls 1600 meter run with a time of 7:12 and 1st place in the 800 meter run with a time of 3:14.83. Wicahpi Giago was equally impressive for the 7/8 girls, winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 15.1 and finishing 2nd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 33.93.
In the 5/6 girls sprints, Bernice Brewer had a strong day, finishing 2nd in both the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.83 and the 200 meter dash with a time of 32.36. Mia Waters added a 3rd place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 33.34 and claimed 1st place in the 5/6 girls 400 meter run with a time of 1:24.93. Corrina Zuniga also contributed with a 5th place finish in the 200 meter dash at 34.52.
For the 5/6 boys, Gage Garrett finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 15.45 and claimed 2nd place in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:19.84. Barrett Haas Jr. followed closely behind, finishing 7th in the 100 meter dash and 5th in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:24.10. Diyari Huggins contributed a 2nd place finish in the 5/6 boys 200 meter dash with a time of 35.22, while Robert Two Two finished 3rd in the same event at 35.31.
Looking Ahead
This Thursday, April 30th, the Khiíŋyaŋkapi will take the track one final time at Lakota Tech, looking to close out the year on a high note.
