Maȟpíya Lúta Kȟoškálaka Holds Off Little Wound in Thrilling Region 7A Battle

In a Region 7A matchup, the number one region-ranked Maȟpíya Lúta hosted number four region-ranked Little Wound in a tightly contested game that came down to the final seconds.

The game was competitive from the start. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, and the score was tied 13-13 at the end of the opening period. Maȟpíya Lúta began to find its rhythm in the second quarter, creating some separation before halftime and taking a 30-22 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Maȟpíya Lúta continued to build momentum. Strong defensive play and steady scoring helped extend the lead, and by the end of the third quarter Maȟpíya Lúta was in control with a 53-39 advantage.

Little Wound, however, refused to back down. The visitors mounted an impressive comeback in the fourth quarter, chipping away at the lead and eventually taking a one-point advantage late in the game, their first lead since the opening quarter.

With the pressure on, Maȟpíya Lúta stayed composed. Riley Brave stepped to the free throw line and calmly knocked down two clutch free throws to give Maȟpíya Lúta the lead once again. Little Wound had one final chance in the closing seconds, but the last shot would not fall, allowing Maȟpíya Lúta to hold on for a dramatic 62-61 victory.

Christian Jack led the scoring for Maȟpíya Lúta with 14 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. Riley Brave added 10 points, including the game-winning free throws in the closing moments.

The team also shared the ball well throughout the game. Braylon Little contributed four assists, while Braiden Lunderman added three assists as Maȟpíya Lúta continued to find ways to create opportunities on offense.

With the win, Maȟpíya Lúta advances to the Region 7A Championship game where they will face Eagle Butte in a rematch of the Lakota Nation Invitational finals.
