Freshman Retreat: How Students Embraced Community and Spirituality!

Multiple

On September 18th, the 9th-grade class set out for their Freshman Retreat, boarding the bus at 8:00 AM and traveling to Our Lady of the Sioux Church in Oglala, SD. Despite the windy weather, the students spent the day bonding with their classmates, teachers, and upperclassmen, embracing this year’s retreat theme. The focus of the retreat was on building community (tiyospaye) and exploring the Jesuit and Lakota identity of Mahpiya Luta.

Two high school teachers, Ashley (Lakota Language Levels 3 & 4, Physical Education) and Justin (Jesuit, Physics), shared personal reflections on these identities. Ashley discussed Lakota values and how she integrates them into her daily life, while Justin recounted the story of St. Ignatius, the founding of the Jesuits, and how he incorporates Jesuit principles into his everyday life.

At the core of the Spiritual Formation Program are the spiritual retreats offered to each class, inviting students to delve deeper into their personal spirituality and relationship with Thunkasila (God). Each year, these retreats are customized to align with the specific needs and aspirations of each class. They are organized collaboratively by the Spiritual Formation department and the Spiritual Leadership Team—a group of upperclassmen who demonstrate leadership and a strong interest in planning spiritual activities.

The 9th and 10th grade retreats typically focus on “coming of age” themes, encouraging reflection and growth. This format was originally developed by the late Lakota Studies and language instructor, Unci (Grandmother) Philomine Lakota and current Lakota Language level 1 teacher Leksi (Uncle) Roger White Eyes, to help students transition from childhood to young adulthood, fostering maturity and responsibility.
