Mahpiya Luta High School Graduate, Class of 2023
Meet Tyrell Jumping Eagle, a former Mahpiya Luta student athlete whose journey from high school to college athletics is an inspiring example of dedication, hard work, and personal growth!
Currently a student athlete at Anderson University, Tyrell reflects on how Mahpiya Luta helped shape his transition to collegiate life and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
“Something that really helped me transition from graduation to college was taking advantage of the college visits we had in high school,” says Tyrell. “They gave me a glimpse into what life on a college campus is like how students manage their time between classes, athletics, and personal life.” Tyrell credits Mahpiya Luta with instilling the importance of prioritizing academics. “In high school, I was always told by coaches, teachers, and family that academics come first. This mindset has really helped me stay on track in college.”
Tyrell’s experience at Mahpiya Luta not only prepared him academically but also taught him valuable time management skills. “Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life was something I learned in high school. Mahpiya Luta really emphasized getting your work done before anything else, which has made it easier to manage my busy college schedule.”
As a collegiate football player, Tyrell faces the challenge of balancing intense athletic commitments with academics. “The physical and mental fatigue from football practices and games can be tough,” he admits. “After a long practice or game, it’s hard to focus on schoolwork, but the discipline I learned at Mahpiya Luta helps me push through.” Despite these challenges, Tyrell finds immense rewards in being a student-athlete.
“The lifelong friendships I’ve made, the personal growth I’ve experienced on and off the field, and the exposure and opportunities have been incredible. I’ve learned so much about myself, and the memories I’ve made will last a lifetime.” One of Tyrell’s most cherished memories from his first season was a thrilling win against their rival team. “We brought home the bronze ball, which represents the first game ever played between the two teams. That victory was a defining moment for our team and something I’ll never forget.”
Additionally, one of the most important lessons Tyrell wishes he’d known before becoming a collegiate athlete is the level of commitment required. “At the collegiate level, playing a sport is like having a job, not just a passion,” he says. “It’s a full time commitment, and if you’re not willing to give it your all, it’s not the right path for you.” This realization has been a defining moment in Tyrell’s journey. “It’s not just about loving the sport it’s about dedicating yourself to it, like you would to any career. That level of commitment is what sets you apart.”
Tyrell’s dedication to his sport and his academics is reflected in his approach to goal setting. “From day one, I’ve always set goals for myself,” he shares. “During football camp and practice, I made it my goal to get playtime in games, and I achieved that by working hard both on and off the field. Setting goals and staying focused on them has been a key part of my success.”
Looking to the future, Tyrell plans to stay involved in football by coaching. “Whether as a head coach or assistant coach, I want to help others achieve their dreams of playing at the next level. I know how important it is to have guidance, and I hope to be that person for future athletes.”
“I want to leave a legacy that emphasizes the importance of balance,” Tyrell says. “Balancing your time, working hard, and seeing the rewards of that work that’s the message I want to pass on to future student-athletes. It’s not just about putting in the work; it’s about committing to the grind and being disciplined enough to see it through.”
As a role model for current students, Tyrell offers valuable advice. “Focus on building good habits now, such as work ethic, time management, and discipline. These will take you far in life, whether you pursue athletics or another path.”
For student athletes hoping to take their talents to the next level, Tyrell’s advice is clear: “Prioritize your academics, your mental and physical health, and stay dedicated to your sport. Set goals, work hard, stay disciplined, and learn from challenges. And most importantly, have fun along the way.”
As Tyrell continues to pursue his goals both on and off the field, he remains a proud representative of the school and a role model for future student athletes. We look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next and can’t wait to see how he continues to inspire others along the way. Go Tyrell!
