For Bobbi White, high school was more than a stepping stone, it was a foundation for lifelong relationships, academic excellence, and a calling to serve others.
During Bobbi’s time at Mahpiya Luta, the most meaningful part of the experience was the relationships built along the way. “I was able to make meaningful relationships with my classmates that have been lifelong,” she shares. “Many great memories were made from the classrooms, bus rides, athletics, and everywhere in between.” Those shared moments of long school days, packed sports schedules, early mornings, and late nights, did more than create memories. Bobbi built discipline and resilience. Balancing academics and athletics helped sharpen time management skills that would later prove essential in college and beyond.
Through strong academic performance in her early years at Mahpiya Luta, Bobbi set the stage for a remarkable senior year achievement: earning the prestigious Gates Millennial Scholarship, a full ride scholarship to any institution. With the guidance of teachers in her scholarship writing class, “shout out Heidi,” Bobbi adds, the application process became an opportunity for reflection, growth, and possibility. Receiving the Gates Millennial Scholarship secured financial support not only for her undergraduate degree but also for her graduate education. That milestone stands as a testament to hard work, mentorship, and the power of preparation.
After graduation, Bobbi continued her academic journey at South Dakota State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in American Indian Studies. Driven by a deepening passion for mental health and wellness, Bobbi chose to further her education, also at SDSU, completing graduate degrees in both Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Today, Bobbi is a licensed professional counselor in the state of South Dakota, using her education to support individuals, families, and communities in meaningful ways.
Bobbi’s most recent accomplishment reflects both courage and vision: establishing her own counseling practice, Wamakognake, LLC. “This has propelled my professional and personal growth in ways that I could not have imagined,” she shares. Rooted in a passion for mental health and overall wellness, Bobbi’s work centers on helping others become the best versions of themselves. Wamakognake, LLC was born from that commitment, a reflection of both professional expertise and personal dedication. She also gave back to the MLO community by sharing a Mental Health Presentation with high school students, offering ways to navigate and cope with stress for success.
Looking back, Mahpiya Luta played a vital role in shaping Bobbi’s journey. The discipline developed through busy school days, the academic rigor that prepared her for scholarships, and the meaningful relationships formed along the way all contributed to her long-term success. Mahpiya Luta did not simply prepare her for college, it prepared her for leadership, service, and entrepreneurship.
Alumni Wisdom
When asked what advice she would give to her past self or current seniors, her message is both compassionate and empowering:
“Be a good relative to yourself by showing up for yourself. Tend to your most basic needs, develop a growth mindset, focus on positivity, and foster meaningful relationships.”
Bobbi’s advice is rooted in lived experience, but more so an understanding that success begins with self-care, community, and the courage to grow. From Mahpiya Luta classrooms to graduate degrees, professional licensure, and business ownership, Bobbi’s story reflects dedication, heart, and a commitment to wellness that continues to uplift others.
