Alumni Highlight: Dale Pine Jr.

Multiple

Dale Pine Jr., a proud graduate of Maȟpíya Lúta High School, embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication that defines our alumni community. Growing up in Pine Ridge Village, Dale began his journey at Maȟpíya Lúta in Montessori, ultimately graduating in 2005. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Chadron State College in 2010, and today he is a certified teacher with five years of teaching experience.

Reflecting on his time at Maȟpíya Lúta, Dale credits his multimedia teachers, Tim Brick and Matt Rama, for instilling essential skills in video editing and graphic design—skills he continues to utilize in his professional life. He fondly remembers the encouragement from Phil Cooke, SJ, whose probing questions helped deepen his understanding and prepared him for the rigors of college.

Dale faced challenges during high school, balancing academics with three sports. Overwhelmed by the demands, he leaned on the support of his teachers and coaches, ultimately becoming the first in his family to graduate high school. He attributes much of his success in college to the strict regimen and high expectations fostered at Mahpiya Luta, which helped him thrive in an independent learning environment.

His college journey included time at United Tribes Technical College, where he excelled academically and athletically. A transfer to Chadron State College brought him closer to home, where he applied the skills he learned at Maȟpíya Lúta and through his coursework to help shape athletic programs.

Dale’s commitment to education led him to OST Child Care, where his background in high school and college paved the way for immediate job opportunities. In 2019, he became a certified teacher through South Dakota’s alternative certification program, a significant milestone he reflects on with pride. His journey came full circle when he coached the 2013 MLHS volleyball team, fostering connections with players who are now coaching at various levels.

An advocate for Indigenous representation, Dale is passionate about honoring the accomplishments of the Oyate, particularly in sports. He has been instrumental in establishing the Lakota All Star Games, utilizing the skills and connections he developed at Maȟpíya Lúta to bring this vision to life. His social media presence highlights achievements within the community, aiming to elevate Indigenous voices and stories.

Dale’s advice to current students echoes his own journey: “There are many opportunities out there. Don’t be afraid to make your own path in life and don’t give up when it gets challenging!” His story is a testament to the impact of Maȟpíya Lúta and the power of perseverance, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps.
